Mental Health
Mental Health a pandemic that people fail to recognize. WHO describes mental health as a
“state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with
the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a
contribution to his or her community”.
Mr. Brock Chisholm, the first Director general of the world Health Organization (WHO) in
1954, had presciently declared that without mental health there can be no true physical health.
As per a report by Jan Sahas, every sixth Indian needs mental health help and yet the
treatment gap ranges between 70% and 92% for different mental health disorders.
In India, people are usually ignorant of mental health being a problem, people would rather
openly talk about their marital problems but not their mental health issues. But with the
growing modernization the rates of people suffering from mental health have also grown.
What the society needs right now are organizations like Uddami India Foundation, an NGO
who work for the women and young minds of the vulnerable backgrounds of the society.
They work towards the livelihood and the holistic development of the marginalised youths of
the society. The organization has done tremendous job in creating awareness in the
community by sensitizing their beneficiaries through monthly workshops on mental health.
Because as a fact, we belong to a society that is pressurized into ignoring our mental health problems
and as a coping mechanism we often resort to unhealthy means. But if you are struggling with your
emotions, there is no shame in asking for help or even talking to our closed one can also help. We
should keep in mind that we are humans and sometimes life can lead us to problems that make us
emotionally overwhelmed and we should not ignore our feelings rather learn to accept them and get
help if required. Remember there is no shame in asking for help - it just shows you are brave.
If you are unsure of who to connect to talk about your feelings, you can try connecting with Uddami
India Foundation who have a designated counselor who would be there to guide you through your
issues and could even resolve it.
Let’s remember that Ignorance is not a solution.
